CHAPTER 1
- Zephaniah prophesied in the days of Josiah, king of
Judah.
- The pagan priests worshiped other gods but did not
know the one true God. The idolatrous priests worshiped other gods but
knew the one true God.
- God has prepared a sacrifice of Jerusalem and Judah. He will punish all
from the royal family, the idolater, to the complacent.
- We no longer fear Him. We feel that even though God
may withhold blessings and goodness from us, He will not do us any harm.
CHAPTER 2
- God also planned punishment for the nations
around Israel, for those who influenced them into sin or harmed them
in some way.
- Because of their reproach, insults, pride, and
arrogant threats against God’s people the nations would be punished.
CHAPTER 3
- Jerusalem was rebellious and polluted. She has not
obeyed God’s voice, she has not received correction; she has not trusted
in the LORD, she has not drawn near to her God. Her priests have polluted
the sanctuary; they have done violence to the law.
- The unjust knew no shame even before the righteousness
of God.
- God will remove the transgressors and the haughty
leaving only the meek and the humble. (Remove the cause and the effect
will cease.)
