COLOSSIANS

CHAPTER 1

  1. So we will know the will of God to enable us to walk worthy of God and to be fruitful in every good work.
  2. Jesus had the words of God and possessed the power of God. This was given to Him by God to exercise before us (1Jn 5:20).
  3. Jesus is the primary son who will receive the greatest of the inheritance.
  4. a. God created all things. b. In God all things consist. c. Jesus is the head of the church.
  5. Through Jesus' death on the cross, God provided a way for us to have forgiveness of our sins. We now can approach Him without wrath or instant judgment and have a way to be with Him forever.
  6. There is harmony now between heaven and earth. We share the same affections and purpose for God as heaven does. Now, we are one great empire being formed.
  7. If we continue steadfast in the faith, in the belief of the gospel and in the holy living from the gospel we will be holy to God. We will be un-accusable by Satan before God. It will be impossible to be saved unless we continue to lead lives becoming the gospel.
  8. The Gentiles would have the hope of glory, the opportunity for salvation, along with the Jews.

CHAPTER 2

  1. He wanted to see that they were steadfast and remained rooted in the faith.
  2. To keep your faith in Christ and continue to be built up and conformed to His image.
  3. To be careful of following the wisdom and standards of men.
  4. The Greek word here occurs nowhere else in the New Testament. It means the Divine nature and perfections. The divine nature (distinguishing characteristics) of God (His heart, purpose, and righteousness) was in Jesus and exemplified by Him.
  5. By being like Christ we as individual members of the body will make up the complete nature of God as a whole.
  6. We show our commitment to the covenant of God not with hands or flesh, but we are spiritually circumcised in our hearts and from the sacrifice of Jesus our flesh or body of sin is cut off.
  7. a. The requirements or ordinances and rituals of the Law were done away. b. The scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees did not favor this.
  8. By knowledge of God and His will through the Holy Spirit, we can fight against our sinful desires. We will know what to do by the Word of God, and the Spirit will speak to us when needed.

CHAPTER 3

  1. We must seek the things of the heavenly world and seek to be prepared to dwell with Christ. Therefore, w must walk in purity and seek to do things that are pleasing to God.
  2. Love completes and fortifies us. If we have love then we can have patience, kindness, humility, and forgiveness.
  3. Peace in our hearts comes when we will rely on God to handle the circumstances in our lives.
  4. We now represent Jesus therefore do your deeds as a disciple of Christ.  He commands it and we should honor Him.
  5. They must obey their parents.
  6. They should obey in all things unless it is something against God's will.

CHAPTER 4

  1. Sprinkle your conversation with spiritual and religious words knowing what to say and how much to say, in mercy, to anyone who may speak to you especially about your religion. Our speech should be useful, agreeable, and beneficial to mankind and not overly loaded so as to cause disinterest to the hearer.
